The current candidates for Mayor of San Bruno up for election on November 3, 2009 are: Miguel Araujo and Jim Ruane.
For the first time since 1999 incumbent mayor and all-around good guy Larry Franzella will not be on the ballot. Mr. Franzella, strongly involved in San Bruno politics since the Reagan era, will be moving on. That leaves San Bruno voters with a lot to think about, since the status quo will have no choice to be broken.
Jim Ruane, the incumbent vice-mayor and U.S. navy vet, is the grisled veteran. Based on his extensive list of qualifications and long experience, it would seem that Mr. Ruane is easily favored to win.
His opponent, Mr. Miguel Araujo, is a relative unknown but it should be noted this is not his first rodeo. Mr. Araujo (of the local Araujo’s taqueria fame) was seen canvassing the neighborhoods and engaging in some good old fashioned door knocking during his bid to become city council member in 2008 (against, you guessed it, Jim Ruane). Unfortunately, not much is known yet about this dark horse with an obvious desire to enter San Bruno politics highest rank as a virtual rookie.
While Mr. Araujo may seem like a rookie, he has been involved in San Bruno Politics previously. Not only did he run for San Bruno council in 2008, but was actively involved in defeating measures that were previously on the ballot, such as the proposed sales tax increase a few years back. Addtionally, he is opposed to Measure F, the hotel tax increase currently on the ballot for November third. I had the please to speak with this candidate directly, and he has provided me his addtional platform information.
