In a bold move, the San Bruno city council appointed Mr. Michael Salazar to fill the seat left vacated by newly elected mayor Jim Ruane. In a shortened session of a special city council meeting held at San Bruno city hall, the hopeful applicants sat in the audience and waited for the board to appoint their newest member and first since Ken Ibarra in 1996 to be appointed without election.

The meeting began with Mayor Ruane announcing the withdrawal of candidate Rick Biasotti from contention. After a few brief words to thank the candidates for their efforts and dedication, the nomination process began. Vice mayor Medina spoke first by thanking the candidates and promptly nominating candidate Greg Pierce. The nomination was seconded by Mayor Ruane, but was opposed by councilman Ibarra and councilwoman O’connell. Councilman Ibarra then nominated Candidate Scott Buschman for the seat. The nomination was seconded by Mayor Ruane but was opposed by councilwoman O’connell and vice mayor Medina. After deliberating for a few minutes, councilwoman O’connell nominated candidate Michael Salazar. The move was seconded and passed in favor by the council, hereby appointing Mr. Salazar to the seat. Due to the impending holiday vacation, Mr. Salazar was officially sworn in by city clerk Bonner, hereby appointing San Bruno’s newest member of the city council, councilman Michael Salazar.

Given the list of candidates and their qualifications, the council labored intently in the short period it had to make it’s decision. Some councilmembers even expressed a lack of sleep while deliberating during the less than twenty four hour period they had to make a decision. Despite the fact that the councilman Salazar has only been a San Bruno resident for a relatively short time, his list of qualifications coupled with his desire to improve the quality of life in San Bruno made it a clear, albeit tough, choice.

The San Bruno Views welcomes it’s newest city councilman Michael Salazar, and looks forward to his success in his new role.
