The San Bruno Views returns for the new year! It is our wish that your holiday seasons were the happiest and healthiest possible.

The San Mateo Union High School District has announced an upcoming public hearing of the 7-11 committee to discuss their findings regarding the Crestmoor and Hillsdale sites. For those who may not be aware, one of the charges of the committee is to determine and  make a recommendation to the SMUHSD board of trustees whether or not these sites are surplus. This recommendation was made after analysis of current and projected student sizes and district capacity. There was a public hearing at the Capuchino high school theater back in November and the next meeting is scheduled for February 2 at Crestmoor to discuss their findings and take public input. At the time, the committee was criticized by the public for doing a poor job of notification and the high school district is working harder to ensure all notification channels to the surrounding communities are utilized.

From the SMUHSD site and facebook fan page:

The San Mateo Union High School District Surplus Property Advisory (7-11) Committee is holding a public hearing on Feb 2, 2010, 7:00 pm, to present its report, findings and recommendations to the community and to gather community input regarding the following school district properties:
1. Former Crestmoor High School site, currently Peninsula High School
2. Hillsdale High School Site

Public Hearing will be at the Crestmoor Elementary School Multi Purpose Room, 2322 Crestmoor Drive, San Bruno.

The purpose of the 7-11 Committee is to determine if surplus property exists in the District. If you would like to participate in the public hearing, please join us.
*This meeting will be televised LIVE on San Bruno Cable TV Channel 1.*
Additional information and the committee’s draft report is available at:

http://smuhsd.ca.schoolloop.com/cms/page_view?d=x&piid=&vpid=1262503708882.

The findings of the committee as indicated in the draft report note that the entire Crestmoor site can and will be identified as a surplus site, if the district can find a suitable and centralized location for Peninsula High School and it’s students.

It should be noted that it is not a charge of the 7-11 committee to determine whether or not the surplus sites should be sold or otherwise. That is up to the SMUHSD board of trustee’s to determine, based on the recommendations of the committee. There is no indication in the draft that a replacement site for Peninsula high school has been identified.

This announcement is not unexpected, but it will be interesting to hear the additional feedback from the community. The site is used by several business and groups, and is a boon to the local residents. Please don’t miss your chance to have your voice heard on Feb. 02!
